Tropical Hibiscus Houseplant Care: Medium to Hard
- Watering: Hibiscus plants prefer to be consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering in the winter when plant growth slows down.
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. A few hours of direct sunlight, especially in the morning, can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.
- Soil/Drainage: Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix rich in organic matter. Adding materials like perlite or coarse sand can improve drainage and prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, ideally between 60°F and 90°F (16°C to 32°C). Keep away from drafts and sudden temperature changes to avoid stressing the plant.
- Humidity: Enjoys high humidity. Mist the leaves regularly or use a humidifier to maintain humidity, especially in dry indoor environments or during winter.
Fertilizing: Feed every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer. During the winter, reduce fertilization to once a month or stop altogether depending on the plant's growth. - Pruning: Prune in early spring to shape the plant and encourage new growth. Regularly remove dead or yellowing leaves and spent blooms to promote healthy growth and more flowers.
- Pests and Diseases: Watch for pests like aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Prevent fungal diseases by ensuring good air circulation around the plant and avoiding overhead watering.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to encourage blooming.
